Transportation of Bhiwandi

bhiwandi-road

Bhiwandi is a tier 2 city set up close to Mumbai, India’s financial capital. It has an area of over 100 square kilometers and a population of over 1.2 million. With such a large proportion of transient population, it is only inevitable that the city has a fully functional transportation setup. In comparison to other parts of India, Bhiwandi is well off in terms of communication facilities.

Bhiwandi is an industrial center and so it is necessary to ensure good connectivity with the rest of the country. Much of the commerce in the city revolves around the textile industry which is among the largest in the world. The city is a major supplier of fabric to the country and the rest of the world. An industrial center requires an adequate network of transport to cater to a vibrant economic environment. The city is served by numerous transit options that make it ideal to operate as a hub for industries.

Roadways:
The city falls on the National Highway 3 that links Agra and Mumbai. The route is served by a high speed corridor that promotes excellent facilities for commerce. A number of other major roads connect the city to important cities such as Mumbai and Pune. Uninterrupted services for passengers and cargo are available. The roads are maintained by the P.W.D. and the conditions are excellent.

Railways:
The Western Railway of the Indian Railways network serves Bhiwandi. It has a high frequency of local trains ferrying passengers into and out of Mumbai. Besides, being on a major route, it serves as an important stop for several major trains as well. The network is broad gauge and has electrified tracks.

Airport:
Bhiwandi-Nizampur does not have an airport. But the airport at Mumbai is quite close. It is around 60 kilometers from the Mumbai Airport. Buses and private taxis can be hired easily from the airport to Bhiwandi.

Intra city transport:
The existing network of roads in the city is largely inadequate for an industrial area of Bhiwandi’s stature. The roads are narrow and frequent clogging can be observed, especially during the peak hours of working days. Lack of maintenance can be observed in several stretches.

In terms of mass transport options, auto rickshaws are the most reliable and also the quickest. They charge on the basis of meter readings. Autos can be shared or reserved.

Buses ply on certain routes. Though they can be a cheaper alternative, they are time consuming. An initiative of the central government to revamp the mass transport of the city is under process and a number of buses have been acquired. But the effort is yet to reach the desired results.

It is safe to say that one can expect decent transportation facilities in Bhiwandi. Despite the inadequacy of certain sectors, they continue to serve the city fruitfully and have been the backbone of a strong industrial economy.
